Robert Gurney (Hertfordshire Constabulary)
2012-2020

Dr Robert Gurney founded the Disabled Police Association in 2012, following his experience of life-changing injuries he suffered whilst protecting members of the public at the scene of a serious road collision on the M25 motorway. Alongside his DPA role, Rob acted as specialist advisor to the Royal Humane Society, and was a keen fundraiser and ambassador for the charity.
Simon Nelson QPM (Sussex Police)
2020-2022

Simon Nelson served as DPA Vice-President before taking on the role of President from Robert Gurney. Simon joined the DPA following his experience of being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing a gastrectomy operation, which he shared in a candid blog. Simon was awarded the QPM in 2023 on his retirement.
Simon continued working for three years as a Senior Culture and Inclusion Adviser with the College of Policing. He continues to serve in a voluntary role as a Lifeboat Operations Manager at his local RNLI lifeboat station.
Tracy Betts (Essex Police)
2022-2024

Tracy Betts joined Bedfordshire Police in 1995, transferring to Essex three years later. Tracy chaired the Essex Police Disability and Carers’ Network alongside her work with the DPA.
Tracy is diagnosed with dyslexia and has other neurodivergent traits. She also has some physical health conditions, which fit into the definition of disability.
Andrea Shoetan (Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary)
2024-

Andrea Shoetan joined the DPA executive committee to advise on hearing related matters. Andrea wears two hearing aids as a side effect of Ménière’s Disease, an incurable disorder causing vertigo and tinnitus which she was diagnosed with seven years into her policing career. In 2022 Andrea herniated a disc in her lumbar spine causing nerve issues and chronic pain.
